Green Building Solutions

Rainwater is a key to sustainability. Focus Industries has rainwater management solutions that help to manage this precious resource.

Green Building Solutions

Focus Industries is committed to supplying products for sustainable projects in the Western Canadian marketplace. Key to sustainability are projects that are not only environmentally friendly, but have the ability to reduce, reuse and recycle our most precious resources. The culture in Western Canada has recently become accustomed to hearing that our most precious resource comes in the form of oil. Focus Industries believes that water is another key to sustainability. As a result of this philosophy and our expertise in manufacturing high quality fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), we are positioned as a key supplier to many Green Building and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) projects. Whether you are a conscientious home or building owner, municipality or consulting engineer, Focus Industries has the manufacturing expertise and environmental drive to provide practical Green solutions to your upcoming project!

Our expertise has provided Focus Industries with the opportunity to work on projects that collect and re-distribute rainwater in both above and below ground holding tanks for residential and commercial applications. Focus Industries tanks provide a great fit for applications and designs under the Sustainable Sites category in Credits 6.1 and 6.2.

Credit 6.1-Potential Technologies and Strategies
"Reuse stormwater volumes generated for non-potable uses such as landscape irrigation, toilet and urinal flushing and custodial uses."

Credit 6.2-Potential Technologies and Strategies
"Design mechanical or natural treatment systems such as constructed wetlands, vegetated filter strips and bioswales to treat the sites stormwater."

Site selection and reduced site disturbance are two key criteria that fall under the Sustainable Sites category. Focus Industries is able to offer FRP heavy loading holding tanks that can be installed underneath a parking lot or structure, eliminating the footprint of the tank installation. These specialty tanks, in conjunction with an engineered parking lot, are able to accommodate normal traffic loads and can help lead to design credits under Credit 1 (site selection) and Credits 5.1 and 5.2 (reduced site disturbance).

Credit 1, 5.1 and 5.2-Potential Technologies and Strategies
"Select a suitable building location and design the building with a minimal footprint to minimize site disruption."

Developing an erosion and sedimentation control plan for the project site during construction is Prerequisite 1 under the Sustainable Sites category. In the Potential Technologies and Strategies section it is suggested to "Consider employing strategies such as sediment traps and sediment basins." The corrosion resistant characteristics of fiberglass manufacturing, combined with the high levels of customization that can be achieved, result in products that are highly compatible with this strict prerequisite.

Water Efficiency is another key category when working towards and looking for LEED credits. Focus Industries has developed several key partnerships with companies that sell complimentary products to our tanks. Therefore, we are able to offer our customers options for sewage treatment through the Bionest packaged sewage treatment plant. The effluent that is discharged from this system, in some applications, can be used for subsurface drip irrigation. This technology is successfully being used at several golf courses across Canada and can help towards Credits 1.1, 1.2, 2, 3.1 and 3.2 of the Water Efficiency category. This technology has the ability to reduce or eliminate the use of potable water for irrigation purposes.

Credit 1.2 and 1.2-Potential Technologies and Strategies
"Use high-efficiency irrigation systems and consider using stormwater and/or greywater for irrigation."

Credit 2 Innovative Wastewater Technologies
"Consider using stormwater or greywater for sewage conveyance or on-site wastewater treatment systems."

Credit 3.1 and 3.2-Potential Technologies and Strategies
"Consider reuse of stormwater or greywater for non-potable applications such as toilet and urinal flushing, mechanical systems and custodial uses."

The construction materials and resources are essential to an effective LEED design and Focus Industries fiberglass plant, which is located in Central Alberta, has an ideal location to satisfy the Regional Materials requirements for Credits 5.1 and 5.2. The 800 kilometer radius around our manufacturing facilities encompasses almost all of Alberta and brings the cities of Regina, SK and Salmon Arm, BC within reach. In addition, Focus Industries also has the ability to use a resin that is 15% organic in the construction of holding tanks for non-corrosive applications. These innovative and rapidly renewable raw materials can help obtain a point under Credit 6 of the Materials and Resources section.

Credit 6-Rapidly Renewable Materials (Requirements)
"Use rapidly renewable building materials and products (made from plants that are typically harvested within a ten-year cycle or shorter) for 5% of the total value of all building materials and products used in the project."

Focus Industries tanks are used in a vast array of applications that do not necessarily fall within the context of LEED, but are nonetheless essential an essential construction component. Focus Industries tanks are often used as potable water storage tanks for both residential and commercial applications, for storage of fire protection water, storm water management, sewage lift stations and chemical storage.
